From print to multimedia, IB celebrates #40

From the pages of In Business magazine.

You probably noticed the large number on the front cover of this month’s issue. Normally we try not to be so self-serving with our cover images, but this year is very significant for IB as we head into our 40th year of publishing. I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of this publication for 15 of those 40 years and have certainly seen it come a long way.

When I joined In Business magazine in 2002, we really were just that — a magazine. We had started to venture into the event business with our Extreme Networking Event (now called the Exec Connect), but that would be our only IB event for the next seven years. Our web presence was very basic — mostly a static website that was used to contact us or find information about subscriptions and advertising.

Market conditions and our company mission have led us to where we are today, a true multimedia company. As the recession hit late in 2007, we had to diversify our product line, which led to the creation of our IB Events division (now hosting more than 20 annual events), as well as a more comprehensive website and a twice-weekly Ezine, which delivers web-exclusive content. This diversification helped us survive the recession and, more importantly, thrive post-recession. The magazine has never been stronger despite national reports that “all print is dead.”

That begs the question: “What’s in store for the next 40 years?” In a business climate that makes it hard to plan even five years ahead, that’s a very difficult question. However, we’re certainly poised for many more years of success as we serve the Greater Madison business market. We must continue to provide new ways for our readers to consume our content, especially for today’s mobile workforce, continue to reach younger professionals, and follow our mission to “connect and elevate the business community” through new IB events and digital and print products.

I’d like to thank our past IB employees, with a special “thank you” to our current staff and bloggers. We toast you, our readers, in the accompanying photo. Congratulations to all local companies celebrating milestone anniversaries this year, as noted in our anniversary feature. Cheers, and here’s to a happy and successful 2017!
