Evers vows to veto budget if UW System diversity funding is cut

Gov. Tony Evers said Wednesday night that he would veto any state budget including a $32 million, Republican-backed proposal to cut state funding for UW System diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

Evers’ comments followed Assembly Speaker Robin Vos’ statement that the Legislature’s GOP-controlled budget committee would cut funding for the UW System’s diversity programs. Vos, in turn, was reportedly skeptical of Evers’ veto threat.

In the event that Evers does veto the budget entirely, the Legislature would not pass a new budget until around October.

If approved, the budget cuts would come as 10 of the UW System’s universities are projected to fall $60 million short, collectively, of their current spending needs.
