Essen Haus project scaled back

After meeting with the neighborhood and city staff, McGrath Property Group will not remove four houses on Blair Street as part of a planned redevelopment.

The homes, part of the First Settlement Historic District, were originally targeted for demolition in a massive redevelopment of the Essen Haus block on East Wilson Street in Madison. As a result, McGrath’s current proposal has been downsized to from 240 to 180 apartments offering between 9,000 and 10,000 square feet of commercial space, and 208 parking stalls.

The redevelopment will mark the end of two popular businesses, the Essen Haus restaurant and the Come Back In. The Hotel Ruby Marie and Up North Bar corner are not part of McGrath’s plans.

Construction should begin in fall and be completed in spring of 2021, according to a Capital Times report.
