Emily Torgerson, National CooperativeRx
IB’s Professional of the Week is the premier way to meet Dane County’s professionals. This week features Emily Torgerson, communications manager, National CooperativeRx.
What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
The pharmacy benefit world is extremely complex and constantly changing, so it’s necessary to keep up on the latest terminology and industry trends. It can be challenging to communicate to our members on an acceptable reading level and eliminate jargon, but that’s also why I love my job. It’s very rewarding to help our members know how to save money with their pharmacy-benefit plans and make specialized information easy to comprehend.
Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
I consider Jen Dickman, communications manager at WPPI Energy in Sun Prairie, one of my business role models. She was a former supervisor of mine and taught me so much in a short time about the communications industry. I learned most of my InDesign and Photoshop skills from her, and she is an expert wordsmith. I consider her a friend as well as a mentor, which is such a valuable thing.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
A high point in my career was my first promotion last fall to communications manager at National CooperativeRx after the departure of my former supervisor. I had only been with the company for a year and a half and felt honored to be trusted enough to perform well in this role.
Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
I would tell my 21-year-old self not to care what others think of you. If you’re focused on your work and achieving your goals, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Also, don’t spend too much time every day worrying about your appearance and whether you have the right outfit on — the quality of work you produce is so much more important.
What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?
I love working in Dane County because of the ample networking and educational events it has to offer. I frequently attend social media workshops at DreamBank and partake in American Marketing Association events, where I’ve learned numerous communications strategies to apply to my work. Outside the office, I love exploring the great gastronomy scene of Madison and attending shows on weekends. And, of course, who can forget about the Terrace in the summertime?
Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?
I have an excellent memory and can recall what people wore and what events happened on a certain day. My friends will be talking about an event that happened years ago and I can recite each person’s outfit and the exact date it occurred. Then we’ll check Facebook to see if I was right!
What are your guilty pleasures?
I am a self-proclaimed “Bravolebrity” and am obsessed with reality television shows on Bravo like Real Housewives, Summer House, and Vanderpump Rules. Whenever I’m in Los Angeles visiting friends, I’ll make them bring me to the restaurants and bars the shows film at, and I’ve met quite a few stars!
