Duluth Trading puts store plans on pause
As the retailer evaluates consumer habits, Duluth Trading Co. is holding off on any new store openings, according to a report from the Milwaukee Business Journal. The parent company, Duluth Holdings Inc., had been opening new stores at about 15 per year but added just four stores in 2020. The company does not plan to expand at this time, citing a need to watch customer shopping behavior while the economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even as the retail chain slows the growth of stores, the company recorded its largest gain in customer acquisition in recent history, showing 17% growth in new buyers. CEO Steve Schlect said Duluth Trading would like to develop a new store concept that reflects how the retail environment has changed.
