Democrats call on GOP to consider gun safety measures

In the aftermath of the latest mass shooting, this time at a Texas elementary school, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is calling on the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature to take up gun safety measures that have failed to pass in previous legislative sessions. Kaul, a Democrat, wants Republicans to consider measures to ban untraceable, homemade “ghost” guns and require universal background checks for gun buyers, according to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Kaul and other Democrats made the demand one day after a gunman killed 21 people — 19 children and two teachers — at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde Texas, about 85 miles west of San Antonio. In addition, State Senator Melissa Agard, D-Madison, circulated a petition for the Legislature to enact universal background checks and allow judges to remove guns from people they consider to be a safety risk.
