Commission rejects plans for downtown hotel

On a 5-4 vote, the city’s Plan Commission rejected the latest plans for a hotel at the corner of North Webster Street and East Washington Avenue. The commission asked the North Central Group to return in late October with revisions to its design.

The North Central Group wants to erect a 10-story, 164-room hotel just a block off the Capitol Square that would carry the Marriott’s upscale AC Hotels brand, but concerns about traffic, a sidewalk easement, and the building’s height in relation to a nearby Frank Lloyd Wright property are still being raised. The plan now needs approval from both the Plan Commission and the City Council, as well as a final approval from the Urban Design Commission.
