Commission denies HotelRED expansion

The Madison Plan Commission has rejected a conditional use permit to add four stories to HotelRED, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

The permit would have allowed Red Hospitality, the hotel operator, to add 100 feet in building height and nearly double the number of rooms in the 48-room boutique hotel, located at 1501 Monroe St.

However, commissioners and residents of the surrounding Vilas Neighborhood objected to the scale of those plans.

The expansion, which would have resulted in more room tax revenue for the city, also would have allowed for additional event space, plus a top-floor kitchen and lounge.
