Brookings ranks Madison 5th nationally for tech sector

The Brookings Institution released a report on the nation’s advanced industries sector, ranking the Madison area fifth nationally among the country's largest 100 metro areas.

Between 2013 and 2015, advanced industries goods and services — or industries that spend at least $450 per worker per year on research and development and employ at least 20% of their workforce in STEM-intensive occupations — in the Madison area grew 8.06% a year on average. In 2015, more than 44,100 advanced industry jobs indirectly supported 35,310 others.

The top five advanced industries in the Madison area according to the report were software products, research & development services, engineering, computer systems design, and management consulting.

The report also says the advanced industry worker in this area earned an average salary of $77,045 in 2015 compared with $48,695 across all industries.
