Black Earth Meats fails in Kickstarter campaign

A Kickstarter campaign Black Earth Meats owner Bartlett Durand launched in October raised just $91,116, well short of his $225,000 goal. Durand had hoped the campaign would generate enough money to purchase Black Earth Meats’ slaughterhouse equipment back from the Bank of New Glarus so the business could relocate. Durand is currently considering selling his related business, the Conscious Carnivore butcher shop in Madison, to a group of investors to help raise money.

Kickstarter rules state that all pledged money must be returned to the donors if a campaign’s goal is not reached. Durand hopes anyone interested in helping the business reach its goals, including the 991 people who pledged in the Kickstarter campaign, will do so directly through, where a fundraising account has been set up.

The slaughterhouse closed in July after the Village of Black Earth labeled it a “public nuisance.” Now Durand is looking to relocate the business, and several communities have shown interest.
