BBB advises best moving options for customer budgets and needs
Wisconsin’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) has some advice in choosing the best moving option based on customer needs and budget.
The option of hiring a full-service moving company is low-stress and practical. Professional movers are trained to pack and transport items safely and are also equipped to move items into hard to access areas. This is typically the most expensive option.
Shipping belongings that fill just a few boxes is a cheap and easy way to move — especially if the move is across the country. Some companies, like long-distance bus lines, may offer cheaper services that big-name package shippers. That said, boxes shipped by ground may take several days or even a few weeks to arrive at their destination, and shipping fragile items poses the risk of damage.
A truck rental company could be a good choice for DIY movers. These companies provide appropriately sized trucks or trailers, but the customer is responsible for the packing, loading, driving, and unloading. This option is less expensive than hiring professional movers; however, it’s physically demanding, and gas, insurance, and lodging could represent significant additional costs.
Moving container services are yet another option available to customers, bringing portable storage containers to homes and transporting them to their destinations once they have been packed. Companies usually allow a few days for loading and unloading and are generally less costly than a full-service moving company.
