Assembly approves resolution supporting F-35s

Several days after the State Senate voiced its support for the basing of F-35 jets at Truax Field, the Republican-controlled State Assembly has followed suit.

On Oct. 10, the Assembly voted 87–9 to endorse a joint resolution expressing support for the U.S. Air Force basing F-35 jets to Truax Field, located at the Dane County Regional Airport, according to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Madison representatives Melissa Sargent and Chris Taylor joined seven other Democrats in opposing the resolution. Every Republican representative voted in favor of it.

The 115th Fighter Wing at Truax, which would host a squadron of 20 F-35 jets, is one of two preferred bases identified by the Air Force. However, local residents who would be impacted by projected noise oppose the basing, and a final decision by the Secretary of the Air Force is expected early in 2020.
