Are you Executive of the Year material?

From the pages of In Business magazine.

Last month, I did a callout encouraging young and accomplished IB readers to put their hat into the ring and fill out an application to be considered for the 2019 40 Under 40 class (by the way, you can still fill this out before Nov. 16 at

However, this month I’m devoting this space to another great program that IB will present early in the 2019 calendar year: our annual Executive of the Year awards. It’s hard to believe that we are already entering our sixth year of this event, where we will once again honor area executives based on their leadership, innovation, and company success over the past year.

There is one big misconception with this award program that we encounter every year, and that’s the assumption that this is just a program for the very top executives. This is not the case. Yes, top executives are certainly eligible, but the Executive of the Year program is open to all C-level titles (that includes titles like chief finance/operating /marketing /creative officer, etc.), and to presidents, owners, partners, executive directors, or any other executive-level position.

This year, we will be handing out awards to executives in the following categories: Small Company, Medium Company, Large Company, Startup Company, Family Business, CFO of the Year, and CEO of the Year. We also will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to one executive that will honor his/her accomplishments over their entire career.

To be eligible, you must work for a company in one of the following counties: Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Rock, or Sauk. Remember, with the exception of the Lifetime Achievement Award, executives will be judged based on their accomplishments during the past 12 months only. Applicants must be prepared to provide quantitative data on their contributions to the company success and give examples of strategic initiatives that helped strengthen the company’s market position.

All of the award program details (including application materials) can be found at, and the deadline to nominate is quickly approaching on Nov. 15. We’ll honor the winners at an award ceremony on Feb. 15, 2019, which will once again be held in the majestic Capitol Theater at the Overture Center for the Arts.
