American Girl sales drop

Middleton-based doll and book manufacturer American Girl saw a big hit in its quarterly sales, which Mattel, its parent company, blames largely on the closing of Toys R Us stores in 2018.

American Girl product sales fell 32 percent for the quarter ending March 31, from $67.5 million a year ago to $45.6 million in 2019.

Despite the closure of two signature retail stores, including one at the Mall of America in March, Mattel execs remain optimistic, saying the brand remains strong and will be bolstered by a live-action, American Girl feature film in the works, according to media reports.
