AMC Madison 6 shuts down a month earlier than planned

AMC Madison 6, once known as Sundance Cinemas 608, rolled credits for the last time on Dec. 1, a full month earlier than expected, according to a report from The Capital Times.

The theater’s lease at Hilldale was up at the end of December and it was not planning to renew, but the decision to shutter weeks early came without notice to customers. Hilldale is planning to redevelop the theater site at the south end of the property into new retail space.

With the closing of AMC Madison 6, the only remaining theaters in Madison proper are on the UW–Madison campus; the rest of Dane County’s movie theaters are located either in the Madison suburbs or on the outskirts of the city. The loss of the movie theater also raises questions about where the Wisconsin Film Festival will screen many of its movies, as the AMC Madison 6 has been one of the festival’s homes for many years.
