Allied Drive grocery store approved

Luna’s Groceries may finally be the oasis needed in the food desert that has long plagued the Allied Drive neighborhood off Verona Road.

The Madison City Council approved a $158,000 grant through the Healthy Retail Access program to convert an existing 2,240-square-foot space into a much-needed food store at 2030 Red Arrow Trail.

According to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal, Mariam Maldonado, a neighborhood resident, will own the store.

The area has gone without a neighborhood grocery store within walking distance since 2009 when Cub Foods closed.
