AI-powered health care solutions provide promising outlook for US hospitals

Verona-based Epic Systems and Microsoft Corp. are expanding their strategic collaboration to develop and integrate generative AI into health care, according to a Microsoft press release. The innovation combines Epic’s electronic health record software with the power and scale of Azure OpenAI Service.

Workforce shortages, increased labor expenses, supply disruptions, and inflationary effects contributed to around 50% of U.S. hospitals reporting negative margins for 2022. The goal of AI-powered health care solutions is to decrease hospital expenses while maximizing productivity. In addition, the technology is intended improve the financial integrity of global health systems and enhance patient care by allowing providers to focus on their clinical duties.

UW Health in Madison is among the first organizations to deploy enhancements that automatically draft message responses; it is joined by UC San Diego Health and Stanford Health Care.
