Africa Fest returns for 23rd year
The African Association of Madison is set to host Africa Fest, returning to Madison Saturday, Aug. 19, according to Madison365. The festival showcases many African countries with the goal of improving race relations, encouraging diversity initiatives, promoting inclusivity in Madison, and celebrating African heritage.
This year’s theme is “Faces of African Beauty.” The festival will begin with its annual Strides for Africa run, a 3k charity event that raises funds to build water wells in rural African villages as well as solar panels for schools. Charity proceeds from the run have so far funded water wells and solar panels in seven African countries.
The festival will feature game tents, a variety of vendors, and stage performances showcasing the countries represented. A “Parade of Nations” opening ceremony event representing all 53 countries will take place at 1:00 p.m.
This year’s festival marks the 23rd Africa Fest, which typically sees 3,000–4,000 attendees from Wisconsin and neighboring states. It is free to attend and will be held at McPike Park from 10 a.m.–10 p.m.
