Festival Foods fined $32K for under-weight food

While none of the violations occurred at its Dane County locations, Onalaska-based grocer Festival Foods has been fined $32,013 by the State of Wisconsin for below-weight, store-brand food.

According to an article first published in the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram that was picked up by the Wisconsin State Journal, Festival Foods had 39 weight violations and two labeling errors uncovered by inspectors from the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. The weight violations were found in seven Wisconsin stores, including 21 in Festival Foods’ three Eau Claire stores, during inspections conducted in January and March. Other violations were discovered in Festival Foods stores in Fort Atkinson, La Crosse, Holmen, and Marshfield.

Court documents indicate the underweight items were chicken cordon bleu, English muffin bread, French bread, half-racks of ribs, meringue powder, and pork chops.

While Festival Foods has paid $20,500 in fines plus $11,513 in fees and surcharges, the stipulation document signed by a company executive and DATCP officials says the agreement should not be construed as an admission of liability.
