Winnebago café to change name
Brothers Jacob and John Dehaven, co-owners of The Winnebago, 2262 Winnebago St. in Madison, have vowed to change the name of their club and restaurant after just eight months after getting negative feedback from the community and several employees saying the venue’s name was inappropriate, according to a channel3000.com story.
"For eight months we have been welcoming people into a space with a name that isn't ours to use, and we're committed to righting this wrong," a release stated.
According to a Tone Madison report, Winnebago is an anglicized version of an Algonquin term that means “people of the filthy water” and is considered derogatory to the Ho-Chunk people who are indigenous to this area.
The DeHavens plan to change the venue’s name by Jan. 1.
