What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
People use radio 24/7, so our team is working to provide the most compelling content 24/7. As the content manager there are no off days, which makes the work-home balance challenging. Luckily for me, I have a great wife!
What I find most rewarding is recruiting talent that has the passion, and then helps build their brand.
Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
Bruce Gilbert, former general manager of ESPN, now senior vice president of sports for Cumulus and Westwood One. A Wisconsin native like me, his “why can’t we” management style struck a chord early in my career. The coolest part is we have become good friends.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
This is a tough one for me and I actually have two. First, being a small part of the Badger football broadcasts for 20 years with Matt Lepay and Mike Lucas. To have the chance to work with a couple of Hall of Famers has been amazing. Second, it has been a privilege to work with an incredible team that has been entrusted to continue the legacy of WIBA AM. You realize early on what the station means to the city of Madison.
Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give to your 21-year old self?
Believe in yourself and your ability. Focus on your goals and don’t let anyone, and I mean anyone, stand in your way. When people tell you “can’t,” let that be the motivation you need to get to the next level.
