PSC approves Epic power line

With Epic Systems projecting its power usage to nearly double by 2028, utility regulators authorized a plan for a $21 million, underground power line to service the enormous and growing campus.

The Public Service Commission approved the 1.3 mile high-voltage line as a backup system in case Epic loses its primary connection. Epic has agreed to pay $10.2 million toward the line’s construction. The rest of the cost will be passed on to about 5 million ratepayers in eastern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, according to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Epic uses solar panels and has a wind farm that generates power, but says it needs to connect to the grid to support computer server demands and 9,500-plus employees. Epic would like to have the line in place by May 2021.
