Evers advocates pathway for pot

Saying he wants to create a pathway for the legalization of marijuana in the state budget, Gov. Tony Evers says medical marijuana will be his first priority.

Speaking to the board of directors of the Wisconsin Technology Council Tuesday at the headquarters of Exact Sciences in Madison, Evers says he favors a statewide referendum on legalization but added that he wants legalization “done correctly,” a reference to the potential pitfalls of legalizing pot.

“I don’t want it to devolve into Pfizer running it,” Evers says. “We need to think through it.”

I'm no liberal, far from it actually, but this is about damn time. Don't take too long. It's too much of a taxable opportunity to pass up considering "Taxing Tony" is going to need the funds for his big budget.

Stop and think what legalization means...is it only about the money it will bring in or is about the well being of families in our state. While I imagine the referendum will pass as there are enough short sighted people in Wisconsin that will think legalization is "cool", well the "pitfalls" are many and are not always clearly visible to the people who think legalization is "cool". I hope the powers to be in both party's stop and consider the possible advantages (few) and the potential inherent problems (many).

Many inherent problems? Tobacco products are legal in Wisconsin. Alcohol is legal in Wisconsin. Marijuana is safer than both. With the same age-related restrictions in place as those products, and following the pattern of states that have already legalized, the problems will be few, if any. Especially since most people who'd have any interest in using marijuana already do so illegally anyway. It's not like the Badger State will suddenly become a free for all of stoners and Cheetos.

Prove the "many" inherent problems. Show us tangible proof. Please, I will wait....

I live in Colorado. Don't pass recreational in WI. What a huge mistake here.

Vote NO against rec marijuana! Again, I am in Colorado. I specifically moved from Denver to Colorado Springs (where they have very limited recreational sales) because I was so disturbed by the frequent smell wherever you'd walk downtown or on public transit. And the pot smell along the interstate and in commercial corridors where grow operations abound. In 4 months living in the Springs, I have smelled pot ONCE in my comings and goings in town.
