St. Norbert Abbey will not demolish historic Monona home
The historic Monona property once known as the San Damiano Friary has received at least a temporary reprieve from the wrecking ball, according to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal.
In a Jan. 31 letter to the city from Hoffman Planning, Design, and Construction, St. Norbert Abbey indicated that it’s no longer interested in obtaining a demolition permit for the 131-year-old landmark. The De Pere-based abbey left open the possibility of an outside buyer with more resources and better ideas for the property, which is located at 4123 Monona Drive.
St. Norbert Abbey has owned the property since 1929. It also is the former home of Allis-Chalmers heir Frank Allis.
