FluGen reports positive vaccine results

Madison-based FluGen, which is developing an experimental flu vaccine to ward off mismatched strains of the flu, is reporting success.

An annual flu vaccine is intended to fight a certain strain of the flu, but often mismatched strains develop during a season that impact the overall effectiveness of flu shots.

According to a Wisconsin State Journal report, annual flu shots administered to the public are about 40 percent effective in keeping the flu bug at bay, on average. FluGen’s studies, being conducted in Belgium using a nasal spray, have shown an antibody response in over half the participants, with people who developed antibodies to both the vaccine and the mismatched virus seeing a 62 percent reduction in the flu.
