What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
Owning a small business of course has challenges, but I think at Tingalls the good by far outweighs the bad. I feel very blessed to be able to work in a job and industry I enjoy and with people who are equally as passionate about creating great art through both print and digital markets.
Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
I have always been drawn to strong women who aren’t afraid to speak their minds. Women who are ambitious in their careers, authentic with their relationships, and who juggle both motherhood and a career with grace. A few names that come to mind are Nichol Harvey, Kneaded Relief Day Spa; Michelle Heitzinger, Urban League; Kim Kotecki, Escape Adulthood; Elyse Smithback, Park Bank; and Tami Schroeder, Funny Faces Kids Entertainment.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
That would probably be a three-way tie between celebrating my 20th year in business (coming January 2020), signing my 1,000th client in the summer of 2017 (I never in my wildest dreams would have thought my tiny freelance business we be so successful), and, of course, winning the In Business Executive Choice Award for Best Website Development Company my fifth year in a row!
Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
Don’t underestimate the intangible rewards of having a compassionate heart. Sometimes you need to lead with your heart, not your mind. My firm’s Giving Tree Program provides hundreds of hours of free graphic design services annually to nonprofits in Dane County. The more I give, the more I seem to get. In 2020, we’ll be offering four $2,020 grants in celebration of our 20th year in business.
