Do you read for pleasure?
Wow, I am always reading a wide variety of books. But I just finished an amazing book, Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo, a reporter and writer. It is about a slum in Mumbai, India, close to the airport and its opulent hotels. It is a “slice of life” piece of non-fiction that reads like a novel. The characters are memorable and relatable, and the writing is so engaging. More than anything, I admired the effort it must have taken to write the book, the humanity portrayed, and the perspective she gave in a forthright, non-condescending way.
What character in any sport, book, movie, or play would you most like to be identified with?
As a Red Sox and a Brewer fan, I should go with Yaz, or Freddy Lynn or Robin Yount, but I have to go with Roberto Clemente.
I vaguely remember him from my youth, but reading about him now (David Maraniss recently wrote a great book about him) and talking about him with my son and daughter makes me understand him as a tremendous role model. His talents as a ballplayer and humanitarian are equally deserving of the Hall of Fame. But it was his grace that most inspires me.
Talented, humanitarian, and graceful … great adjectives to describe a role model. Can you come up with three other words that you think best describe you?
Inquisitive, caring, fair.
