$125M development proposed on Capitol square

Urban Land Interests is proposing a $125 million project for an underused block on the Capitol square surrounded by East Washington Avenue, Pinckney, and Webster streets, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.

As proposed, the project would preserve the American Exchange building and retain the historic facades facing the Capitol on the first floor, but it would add a glass and stone tower as tall as the Capitol building. The entire space would offer 300,000 square feet of office space with 840 underground parking spaces.

No building may be as tall as the Capitol building, nor should be anywhere near that tall. For a new construction to compete visually with the historic and iconic Capitol building would be to forever destroy Madison's unique skyline from many different angles. Let's hope Madison's officials get this, and require a significant revision of this development plan.

I believe building heights around the capitol are restricted to the top ring, not the top of the dome. Many buildings around the square already match this.

Bad idea to build more than 4 stories high!
