Evers: Foxconn unlikely to fulfill promises

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers says the state may need to downsize its expectations for Foxconn in Mount Pleasant after Foxconn downsized its original plans.

In a Wisconsin State Journal report, Evers promises the state will take a look at the original contract. Originally, Foxconn promised 13,000 jobs and a $10 billion investment in a “Gen 10.5” manufacturing plant to produce glass for large-screen TVs, but later downsized to a “Gen 6” plant aimed at producing LCD screens for much smaller electronic devices, like smartphones and tablets.

Evers’ administration is working with Foxconn officials to ensure taxpayers and environmental protections are met, and to determine if the contract should be altered.

In related Foxconn news, the Associated Press reports that CEO Terry Gou will be stepping down from his position to pursue a run for president in Taiwan.

Earlier in the week, media reports hinted that the 68-year-old Foxconn head was looking to move away from running the day-to-day operations and was considering a run for political office.

With that confirmed, Gou hopes to unseat Taiwan’s incumbent president in the 2020 election.
