A long list of blessings to be thankful for

When November rolls around, I make time to remember and appreciate all the good things that came our way in the past year, and to think about ways to avoid repeating mistakes in the future. This is the time to show our appreciation to those who have helped us, mentored us, encouraged us, held our hands through challenges, advised us whether or not we wanted them to, shared their courage (if and when we needed it), and listened when we needed, or just wanted, to talk.

Thank goodness November and Thanksgiving give us the chance to thank those who have been part of our journey. An unknown sage once said, “Gratitude consists of being more aware of what you have than what you don’t.” Especially at this time of year, it’s good to reflect on what we have and are grateful for. Our gratitude lists can change from year to year. This year, I’m grateful for:

  • A family that loves each other and clearly demonstrates this, even when there might be a “conflict of interest.” Don’t let anyone kid you: Families in business together do experience conflict once in a while. I’m grateful that I get to work with my family, and that we complement and support one another in our work the majority of the time.
  • The community I live in, full of people willing to go the extra mile to help someone out. An area filled with citizens who take their civic pride to the next level.
  • A business that we enjoy and that’s an authentic expression of who we are and what we believe in: helping people to recognize and appreciate others.
  • Clients who are fun to work with.
  • Red-hot prospects — you know, the ones who are ready to order and are just waiting for the call.
  • Referrals — especially ones that lead to an ongoing customer relationship.
  • Getting a good night’s sleep in the busy season — and having a busy season!
  • Dinner meetings that end with cheesecake.
  • A good laugh.
  • Close friendships. Friends who share knowledge, and friends who laugh together.
  • An evening at the theater. Give me a Broadway musical and I’m a happy camper. Seats up front and I’m a really happy camper.
  • A fireplace on a blustery day, with my cat on my lap and a great book to read.
  • Volunteering at our church, and for nonprofit organizations that have a mission I want to support.
  • A great team to work with every day! I thank my lucky stars, regularly, for the opportunity to associate with these enthusiastic, dedicated, creative, ethical, trustworthy people.
  • A wonderful new business home that’s full of great energy.
