What I learned my first week at home

My job is to be an extrovert and represent our company in the community. My typical day involves meeting numerous people in person, cultivating existing relationships, and developing new ones. With the onset of COVID-19, my calendar started getting wiped clean with cancellations and I had to come up with a new plan — FAST!

I am thrilled to see so many business leaders in the community wanting to stay engaged with others. Just because we are home, doesn’t mean we can’t be connected. Being at home also presents us with the opportunity to improvise, adapt, and overcome. We can develop new skills that we can bring back once operations go back to normal. We are going to learn a lot and we will grow. Here are some things that have helped me in the first week:

1. Build a community to share ideas and resources

Carole Schaeffer of Miron Construction has been a huge inspiration for me to get involved in the virtual world. We were able to or organize a “Brainstorming: Digital Strategies and Work From Home Tips for Social Networkers” virtual coffee series that had eight people on the first video to go over the past week and learn from each other. Find your own champions who are looking to stay engaged and provide you with some inspiration and accountability. One big takeaway from the week is to be patient with technology. Many businesses have been remote for a while but for others this is new to us. We are all slowly learning how to organize group calls, what video is the best, how to turn on our cameras, etc. We will get there and we will be damn good at it! Stay connected and share resources on what you are learning with others. We all need to be creative and exchange ideas on how we are getting through this new business climate.

2. Reschedule/plan your meetings virtually

You can use Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, etc. Just do not wait until we can meet face to face again keep the conversations going. People will need the interactions.

3. LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning is a monthly subscription service that is great for anyone who is looking to grow in different areas. They have courses that you can take to develop skill sets from leading at home to project management. Whatever area you have been interested in learning about but didn’t have the time to do so before, do it now. It is important to make sure you are choosing topics that can bring value to your company and your job description.

4. Digital marketing

Now more than ever is the time to be online, so learn about this topic and how to reach your audiences. Who knows how long we will go before we can actually meet in person again, so keep your face in front of people! 5. CE credits/designations

Don’t wait until the month your credits are due. Now that you have some time, get it done. Also, think about getting a designation pertinent to your industry.
