The power of ‘why?’

Four-year-old kids are famous for asking “why?” Some kids will continue to ask “why?” “why?” “why?” until eventually the parent exasperatedly exclaims, “Because I said so!” Well, as frustrating as it might be, that 4-year-old is on the right track. “Why?” is the key question a person needs to ask to learn and grow intellectually.

The benefits of being a graybeard

I recently grew a beard for the first time since my freshman year in college. Back when I was 18, it was dark. This time it came in salt and pepper — okay, mainly salt. So I’m literally a graybeard. I’m sure you’ve heard the term. Someone experienced, seasoned, been around the block. It’s not all good getting old — just ask my achy knee, hip, or shoulder — but there are some benefits to being a graybeard.

What makes the great ones great?

I love sports. Not only are they entertaining, but they also provide examples that can be applied to life and especially to business. Right now the focus is on the Olympics, but a concept that’s intriguing to me came from the recent NFL playoffs and some of the great quarterbacks involved, of whom it was said “they make everyone around them better.” How does that relate to the business world? Everyone wants to be great, but how do you make everyone around you better at work?

Management by fear and intimidation … it works

I just finished reading Inferno by Dan Brown, and in the book there’s a line that goes something like this: “Only one form of contagion travels faster than a virus — and that’s fear.” It got stuck it in my head and caused me to think about how fear plays out in business. This definitely relates to the psychology of the individual investor and the stock market, which is alternatively driven by either greed or fear. (“I’m missing out and I’ve got to get in” when it has gone up or “I’ve got to get out” when it has gone down.) But it also made me think about fear and intimidation as a management strategy. Does it work?

The key to communication: don't make assumptions

My favorite philosophy-type book is "The Four Agreements." It discusses four basic principles to live by, one being “don’t make assumptions.” I’m sure you’ve seen this happen in both work and in personal relationships; someone meaning no ill will make an assumption that then creates a misunderstanding. Due to the confusion, someone’s feelings end up being hurt, and it may even escalate into a major conflict. It happens all the time, including to me.
