The mourning after: ‘This is on all white people — even if they didn’t vote for Trump’

On this, the mourning after the morning after, Your Compassionate Squire wishes to address his liberal-progressive-socialist acquaintances in language they can understand, the language of the 1960s.

And then the witch doctor, he told me what to do
He told me:

Ooh, eee, ooh-ah-ah, ting-tang, walla-walla-bing-bang
Ooh, eee, ooh-ah-ah, ting-tang, walla-walla-bing-bang

Oh, wait. I meant those sad-eyed 1960s folk songs we used to hear in coffee houses with dripping candles stuck into Mateus wine bottles.

Where have all the Democrats gone, long time passing?
Where have all the voters gone, long time ago?

Where have all the swing states gone?
Donald Trump won them everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Judging by the day after the mourning after, the answer to the last repeated question is: not any time soon. There has been remarkably little introspection from our liberal-progressive-socialist acquaintances and much denial.

A Trump voter crashes the party.

And the usual futile gestures (to quote from my favorite political movie, Animal House). Wednesday night, “from New England to heartland cities like Kansas City and along the West Coast, demonstrators bore flags and effigies of the president-elect, disrupting traffic and declaring that they refused to accept Trump’s victory,” The Associated Press reports.

In Boston, thousands of … protesters streamed through downtown, chanting “Trump’s a racist” … Flames lit up the night sky in California cities Wednesday as thousands of protesters burned a giant papier-maché Trump head in Los Angeles and started fires in Oakland intersections. Los Angeles demonstrators also beat a Trump piñata and sprayed the Los Angeles Times building and news vans with anti-Trump profanity.

Burned Trump’s head? There’s someone who will never get admitted to Camp Randall on football Saturday!

‘We owe him an open mind’

A hurting Hillary, in perhaps her finest hour Wednesday, said in her concession speech, “Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.”

But our you-know-what acquaintances will have none of it. Especially the part about the open mind.

No, they are too busy playing the race card, frayed and stained through over-use though it is.

“This Is What White Supremacy Looks Like,” an angry polemic in The Nation scolds today. The author, a certain Damon Young, preaches: “Don’t be confused. Trump’s voters didn’t vote against their own interests, they voted for the preservation of white privilege — their paramount interest.” The Nation writer concludes with an obscenity-laced tirade: “White people are so possessed with clutching and cultivating and elevating white supremacy that they will endanger and outright sacrifice their own [F-bombing] lives to do so.”

Mr. Young makes clear that his own racial hatred makes little distinction between cross burners and (one supposes) people like John Kasich and Charles Krauthammer. “This is on all white people — who are complicit even if they didn’t vote for Trump.”

CNN political commentator and professional black man Van Jones talks about a “whitelash.”

The Corporation That Speaks in the Progressive Voice plays its race card face-up. Trump’s victory is the “Triumph of the angry white guy.”

True confession here: Your Humble Squire IS an angry white guy. (It’s a glandular thing. I blame my parents.) But he voted McMullin, not Trump.

Undeterred by such quibbles, editor Paul Fanlund contends, “Trump, eschewing Walker’s subtlety, demonized and ridiculed virtually everyone who was not a white male. That clearly worked far better than anyone could have imagined.”

Did you hear that, gentle reader? Mr. Fanlund just called the voters of Wisconsin racists. Good thing he’s not a name caller.

Except that Trump demonized and ridiculed virtually everyone — white males included. Jeb Bush? “Low energy.” John McCain? “I prefer heroes who weren’t captured.” Mitt Romney is “a total joke.” Ben Sasse “looks more like a gym rat than a U.S. Senator.” And Glenn Beck, “dumb as a rock.”

I don’t like the name calling either and have said so, you knuckleheads. But at least Trump is an equal-opportunity insult machine, the Don Rickles of politics.

Ben Carson? Herman Cain? Sen. Tim Scott? Diamond and Silk? Racist Trump supporters!

Here's why Trump won: He openly rejected the very American idea that all boats can be lifted. His version is that in order for one group to do better, another group has to do worse and as long as we are working to improve the quality of life for minorities, it will come at the expense of white people. Either/or.

Here's why other Republicans won: Trump's coattails. Even those who didn't enthusiastically back him benefited from the xenophobe.

You're free to gloat regardless. I see you already have.

When Obama won 8 years ago, the right said "We hope he fails." Were you among them? Did you speak out against them?

Why do you hold the left to a higher standards? It's about getting the win and Trump has just shown us the way. Don't go high when they go low, go lower, right Dave? Why wait to hit back when you can hit first?

Glenn Beck is "dumb as a rock." Mexicans are rapists.

Many angry white males are rapists. Let me know when Trump says so.

I've noticed a lot of calm and ametuer attempts at humor (please, leave it to the pros) emanating from the never-Trumpers on the right, thinking all will be well with the their firewall of "sane" republicans. You have no idea what you're in for in the next term. And to the aging and cozy, I wouldn't be so sanguine about your SS and Medicare, just because of your skin color. One more note, the last time all three branches were held by R's was 1928. You know what came next. Best prepare. Have fun!

The amount of forgiveness you heap on people who voted for Donald Trump is truly astonishing.

Someone like you who loathes Hillary Clinton and everyone who stands with her calls her unlikable? Perhaps it's those who don't like her who ought to catch some grief, huh? But Lord forbid we should ever point the finger at angry white men for making things awful in this country for everyone not like them.

Wear it like an ugly jacket, Blaska.
