Obey the law — what chilling advice!

The Onion once printed a teaser headline: “War torn Beirut — would bombing help?”

Say the same for riot-torn, violence-plagued Baltimore. Would putting some of the police in jail and cameras on the others help? Quick, more taxpayer money!

Our liberal-progressive-socialist acquaintances are sputtering excuses, inventing new villains, and dealing the race card with even greater promiscuity. They blame indefinable “white privilege” for black failure. Police — no matter their race — are now occupying armies of repression. The jails must be emptied because every gangbanger is guilty only of “crimes of poverty.”

Pretty poor provender after 50 years of Great Society redistribution, federal mandates, and an alphabet soup of well-meaning programs. Today, America has more intractable poverty, fewer intact families, worse public schools, less hope, and more lawlessness — symbolized by Baltimore. Ah, yes! Body cameras are the answer! Every Sandtown will be transformed into a Georgetown. Cocktails at 7.

Race hustlers like Al Sharpton want to blame race — except that Baltimore’s mayor, district attorney, police commissioner, and the majority of its city council are people of color. As is the president of the United States and his attorney general. So, for that matter, are three of the six police officers accused of mistreating Freddie Gray while in custody.

On the Isthmus online forum, your avuncular squire is accused of being a “white supremacist” for suggesting that Baltimore has lessons for Madison. Those lessons? The value of parenting, young men need adult guidance, and when police step back the crazies step up. Well, break out the white sheets and burn the crosses!

Fix the police!

An apologist for urban decay has taken your amiable squire to task for proposing a change in direction. The site is called “Blogging Blue.” I know, I’m give it more eyeballs, but we need to know the handmaidens of societal decay. It reads:

“In his most recent harangue against the Black Lives Matter movement, titled ‘Madison can smell Baltimore’s Smoke,’ the caustically and faux avuncular David Blaska sings the praises of the Baltimore mother caught on camera swatting her teenage son in an effort to keep him from joining the riots. Blaska writes that the woman, Toya Graham, is “mother of the year” for telling news people that she doesn’t want her son to be another Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man who died after injuries sustained while in police custody, sparking the Baltimore riots. Then Uncle Dave pens this chilling bit of advice: ‘Obey the law as a survival strategy.’”

Obey the law? That’s “chilling advice”?

Blogging Blue: “Implicit in Blaska’s advice is the acknowledgment that if young black men want to stay alive, they need to stay out of police custody.”

I responded that the courts will sort out culpability in Baltimore. That is as it should be, and as it should be in Madison, where Young and Foolish has pre-judged the police officer as guilty without trial. Whether Madison, Baltimore, or the federal District of Columbia, what does disobeying the law get you? It gets you arrested, handcuffed, wrestled to the ground, restricted to electronic monitoring, fined, jailed, imprisoned, shot, injured, and also ruins your job prospects.

Beyond all that, breaking the law hurts other people. It hurts the person you robbed, stabbed, shot, vandalized, terrorized, beat, threw stones at, sold heroin to, or otherwise disadvantaged; all the little children caught in the cross fire; honest folks who are charged higher prices to compensate for your shoplifting; and store owners whose shops are burned to the ground. High crime areas = high victim areas. Disobeying the law brings NO good results.

Of course, I did not restrict this advice to people of any one race. It applies to everyone. Only to a liberal could “obey the law” be a controversial life strategy. For, in truth, if young black men want to stay alive, they should get out of Baltimore itself, or Chicago, or anyplace else where young black men are killing other young black men.

As the Washington Post concluded, “the rate of black homicide victims and offenders were disproportionately represented compared to the general population, the 2011 BJS report found. The black victimization rate (27.8 per 100,000) was six times higher than the white victimization rate (4.5 per 100,000). Black offending rate (34.4 per 100,000) was almost eight times higher than whites (4.5 per 100,000).”

David, I have to agree with you, keep your nose clean and the police won't bother you. That includes who you decide to hang out with. So it is no question why police where knocking on doors of Cindy Archer and other Walker followers - they were hanging with the wrong people and why the police bothered them.

Sold heroin to...

Would it surprise you to learn that heroin transactions are almost always white-to-white? Black people get locked up for selling weed, the same drug that is sold and used heavily on every white college campus in the country. Black people use and sell the same amount as white people and are locked up at a significantly higher rate.

Explain why that's a good idea and not responsible for breaking up families and generally screwing over communities, please. To attend UW-Madison is to know a white guy who was busted for growing, using and selling weed and is still enrolled at one of the best colleges in the country. To go to Madison West is to know a black kid whose education has been derailed because he's been pushed around the justice system for selling weed. And thanks to your governor, he's now less likely to be enrolled in job training programs.

In your zeal to continue painting all black folks decrying racial disparities as Al Sharpton, you're just not getting it. When a black guy kills another black guy, he gets locked up. When a white cop kills a black guy, he does not get locked up. Ever. But those are both rare cases, especially in Madison. The problem here is that black guys get locked up more often for all kinds of things that white guys never are. Never. And those contacts with police, the jail and white dominated justice system, as it turns out, aren't very helpful. As much as you'd like to think cops are good dad substitutes, they mostly just throw people in jail.

Does any of this apply to Cliven Bundy?

Overall, good stuff Dave. BUT ... "For, in truth, if young black men want to stay alive, they should get out of Baltimore itself, or Chicago, or anyplace else where young black men are killing other young black men."

No no no!

That means they will come to places like Madison, as they have. Nobody wants that. Although the rest of his article is a train wreck, there is one good line from Ed Hughes "swimming" op ed: "We white folk pretty much get to set the rules in Madison and establish the mainstream social norms and terms of debate." (Source: http://host.madison.com/news/opinion/column/ed-hughes-in-madison-we-swim-in-the-water-of/article_4308ef6f-b6a1-5989-9142-c9475864f59c.html#ixzz3ZTDqEhMY)

Privilege is the goal, not something to be ashamed of (like Ed Hughes is). White people built Madison and set the social norms that made it a once great place. We are living through the decline, where white people are being forced to lower their standards and their community norms to the black mean. This is happening right now in Madison.

Black people didn't build Baltimore, but they run it now. 63% black city. Black political structure, black police force, black state's attorney, black congressman, etc. etc. They can set the rules and social norms, but unfortunately are incapable of doing so. Examples include Sheila Dixon's corruption and the inability of black-run Baltimore to enforce law and order, for example with their rampant jury nullification and "no-snitch" culture. (see here: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2008-08-21/news/0808200122_1_jessamy-jury-nullification-jury-system)

Baltimore is yours, blacks. Go fix it yourselves. Blacks need to raise their mean, not drag down the white mean (as they have done in Madison).

I cringe at concepts like "white people built Madison." All kinds of people built Madison, including black and hispanic and oriental people. All I am saying is that we should celebrate and support the builders, arrest and educate the destroyers. I'm only saying that the narrative that white police are gunning down black people is flawed, as Baltimore itself shows. Again, as ML King said, it is character (and behavior), not race β€” something that all of us need to remember.

10:44 Anonymous said "As much as you'd like to think cops are good dad substitutes, they mostly just throw people in jail."

Um . . . no, they don't. Perhaps you missed that, before they were all of the sudden horrible racists, Madison Police were giving young and gifted felon Tony Robinson "pep talks." (See here: http://www.channel3000.com/news/robinsons-mom-calls-911-weeks-before-willy-street-incident/32118046)

You see, Tony's mother was incapable of parenting her son and her sperm donor was nowhere to be found to do his part. What did she do? She called the police to be a parent to her son. And you know what? Madison Police did this for her. No tickets. No arrests. No shootings. Just talking it out . . . straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting . . . doing all of that stuff that they supposedly don't do because they are too busy sticking it to the blacks. Yet another example of our tax dollars at work, taking care of dysfunctional people that can't take care of themselves.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. Tony lived in a family where grandma dispenses the hallucinogenic mushrooms. Tony lived in a community that decided it was better to release him to terrorize the population after he behaved anti-socially than it was to rehabilitate him. Tony was a violent person and behaved violently on multiple occasions. That caught up with him when he picked a fight with someone who carried a gun.

The End.

Great observation, and quite fitting on this thread. As usual, Dave can't object to fact.

Great observation, because engaging in Constitutionally protected speech is EXACTLY like trying to wrestle a cop's gun away from him.

Did you see Cindy Archer get handcuffed and led away? Did you see Cindy Archer resist arrest and lead the police on a foot chase? Did you see Cindy Archer attack and try to disarm the police? I'll answer for you. No, No, and No. Nothing is what happens when you didn't do anything wrong. When you do something wrong and try to avoid your responsibilities, you end up like Tony Robinson.

Anon 10:44AM - and what is the common thread to all those, whether Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, or whatever color/ethnicity/race/color/religion/citizen/non-citizen/legal/illegal who get thrown in jail? THEY APPARENTLY BROKE THE LAW. So I don't really give a rat's rear end if there are disproportionate numbers. If they broke the law, they broke the law, they broke the law, they broke the law. Solution: DON'T BREAK THE LAW. END OF ARGUMENT.
