It is 1968, that annus horribilis.
The incumbent is a lame duck. The world is aflame; America’s inner cities are burning. Hillary Clinton is Hubert Humphrey, that uninspiring establishment candidate, challenged by a Gene McCarthy figure: idealistic but ungrounded, with no chance of success.
On the Right, demagoguery competes with competence. Like George Corley Wallace, one candidate appeals to nativist instincts. He courts violence with violent rhetoric. The rabble is easily roused.
The hard Left is again mobilized in the cause of More Free Stuff. They’re ready to shut down the process, as they did this past Friday evening at the Trump rally. Chicago, 1968 and 2016. Suckers are punched and police officers are bloodied. Pepper spray stings the air. Our elections have become Brazilian.
What a field day for the heat

Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly saying, “hooray for our side” — Buffalo Springfield
Guests of The Stately Manor know that we are not a Trump safe house. But it is clear that socialists and anarchists set out to and succeeded in shutting down a political campaign event. In so doing, they only fuel the reaction.
Yes, Bernie Sanders bears responsibility. Those were his supporters in Chicago. So was man who tried to rush the stage in Ohio.
