with David Blaska

Work hard and create your own luck? What is this? America?

Seen that television ad for Cadillac?

A young captain of the universe starts out in Hampton casual clothes admiring his in-ground swimming pool, strides purposefully through his California-modern house, slaps five with an overachieving daughter, hands off his Wall Street Journal to his trophy wife, emerges in a Brioni suit, and gets behind the wheel of his Caddy ELR. All the while he’s addressing his audience through the fourth wall:

Why do you work so hard? For what? For this? For stuff? Take other countries. They work, stroll home, stop by the café, they take August off. Off. Why aren’t you like that? Why aren’t WE like that? Because we’re crazy, driven, hardworking believers, that’s why. Those other countries think we’re nuts, but whatever. Were the Wright brothers insane? Bill Gates? Les Paul? Ali? Were we nuts when we pointed to the moon? That’s right. We went up there and you know what we got? Bored. So we left. Got a car up there. Left the keys in it. You know why? Because we’re the only ones going back up there, that’s why.

But I digress.

Look, it’s pretty simple. You work hard, you create your own luck and just gotta believe that ANYTHING is possible.

And all the stuff? That’s the upside to only taking two weeks off in August.

Mr. Success closes with an insouciant “n’est-ce pas?” and a wink. Socialist France, anyone? This automobile commercial is about drive — in both senses of the word. The drive to succeed and thereby reap its fruits trumps the numbing leveling of the security blanket society. Car and Driver describes the Caddy ELR — stickered at $76,000 — as “low, chiseled, aggressive, provocative, and uncompromised …” Its video ad takes the same cocky attitude.

“You work hard [and] create your own luck!”

Brother wizard Kevin Binversie says it “is driving liberals nuts.”

Typical is this angry refugee from Occupy Wall Street quoted at YouTube:

This is the ideology of the 1%. Desperately trying to convince themselves that they have earned their excessive, disgusting wealth. Desperately trying to blame the rest of the world for its poverty. Deluding themselves with their shiny toys and fancy new consumer items. And looking down on others who weren’t lucky enough to be born into money. It’s a mix of avarice, insecurity, jealousy and self-aggrandizing delusion.

Disgusting wealth! Here’s the kicker: The Cadillac ELR is all-electric! So it’s environmentally responsible AND elitist! As long as the horn works. Outta my way!

If Comrade Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama wanted you to have any success, he would give it to you with your rations of potatoes and vodka. All hail Glorious Leader Obama and his brilliant 5 year plan to transform AmeriKa.

I think it's high time for our Juan and Evita Peron in the White House to promise to put one of the new Cadillacs in the garage of every American who has broken the "job lock" that had shackled 225+ years of hard working Americans and diminished our standing in the world. If there are any Americans out there still looking for work, those slackers and fools would only qualify a new electric Tesla. But everyone still gets an Obamaphone, a flat screen TV and food from Evita Obama's garden. Don't cry for us Argentina.

Progressives having a tantrum? My "So What??" meter is pegged out.
That's not news and it's really getting pretty old and tiresome.

Dave, are you really this thick? It's a car ad, meant to do one thing and one thing only; sell cars. It's not a screed about Truth and The American Way. It sells cars by appealing to vanity. That's all, and that's all Cadillac wants it to do. It's manipulative, as all good advertising is, and you're swallowing it's "success" 'tude hook, line and sinker. (Actual subtext: quit whining about having only two weeks off, work your ass off and maybe you'll leave a well-off widow after you work yourself into an early grave. Trying to enjoy life and family is for lazy, cafe-enjoying "others," it's unAmerican. Because, anybody could be this wildly successful and wealthy, and show it by driving a Cadillac.) (Cadillac has always marketed itself this way.)
And Anony 9:38: I know you think your Obama schtick is witty, and it was. In high school. Try being a lefty-cynic. It's way more creative and entertaining. Or at least, relate your comments to Dave's...misplaced ramblings.

An electric Cadillac would be the ultimate upgrade for Segway Boy, but thank God in heaven, that ain't happening.

Despite everything the Obamessiah and his merry band of Marxists have done to bring this great nation to its knees, we still live in a land of great opportunity.

The only thing the left has earned during our five year national experiment with neo-Marxism is our contempt. And we should give it to them with both barrels. Every business owner in America need go no further than their parking lot to see which cars have Democrat bumper stickers. Then carefully, methodically and systematically, those employees need to be dismissed and replaced with people who understand our free market system. Call it upgrading your workforce. It gives the leftys the change they so badly desire and gets them on the fast track to the Utopian American Dream of unemployment and a stalled career path.

If a political purity test is good enough for the city of Madison, it's good enough for America's business. Let the worker's purge begin.

I'm surprised more teachers aren't driving Cadillacs, given how much they make. But I guess they prefer the foreign made cars.

I see the Cap Times is allowing Ernie Wittwer, democrat candidate for Dale Schultz's senate seat, to begin his campaign on their dime by allowing him to put his viewpoints in an article. They better do that for any Republicans too.
