Breaking: Sly has a new gig

Breaking: Sly has a new gig

John Sylvester, better known to Madison radio listeners as “Sly,” will be back on the air, but not in Madison. The controversial radio talk show personality starts Monday, Feb. 4, at WEKZ 93.7 FM, based in Monroe.

His show will air weekdays from 3 to 6:30 p.m., confirmed station operations manager Kent McConnell.

After 15 years, Sylvester lost gig at WTDY 1670 AM in Madison just before Thanksgiving Day due to a format change. The station also released its news staff and earlier this month went to syndicated sports radio.

McConnell said of Sylvester, “He reached out to us. We’re always looking for ways to connect with our listeners. It is a bit of a change for us.”

Sylvester took a stridently pro-union, anti-Republican stance at WTDY. Although he could engage in intelligent political commentary, albeit from a progressive perspective, he also engaged in attempts at low-brow humor that some, including former Madison mayor Dave Cieslewicz and this author, said amounted to misogyny.

Most notably, he called then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice an Aunt Jemima. He suggested that Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor performed sexual favors to win election, rejoiced at her diagnosis of cancer, and made fun of her children. And he seemed to stalk rival talk show host Vicki McKenna.

The 36,000-watt WEKZ bills itself as “The Big Oldies.” It broadcasts local high school sports and is heavy on farm reports. “He knows his audience may be a little different,” McConnell told me. “He may have to tone it down a smidge. But as he says, he’s still got to be Sly.”

I lived in Green County--among the most well-armed counties in the state, if not the nation. On this stand alone, Sly in Green County will go over like a fart in church.

The 93.7 FM signal is crystal clear in Madison, so I'm not sure it's accurate to say that he won't be on the air here.

Sly is a foul mouth pig.

Great stuff for a defamation lawsuit Dave! The truth? The truth is that Sly never "rejoiced" in Rebecca Klefisch's "diagnosis of cancer." That's absurd. He criticized her for using her cancer as a campaign prop in campaign commercial... several months after she announced she was completely "cancer free."

And when people call politicians whores... they don't literally mean they're whores.

And check out a coverage map: WEKZ is one of the biggest areas in the midwest!

WEKZ doesn't go to Madison? Hmmm... the FCC coverage map says it goes all the way up to Baraboo and down to Dixon, Illinois. I guess you know more them, though, Dave.

The only thing Sly clearly defines is blubber.

It's truly disgusting to see him in person.

Did anyone see Comrade Nichols Sunday praising Sly for warning us about Ron Johnson? I wish the WSJ would have printed this article instead.

Looking forward to having Sly's voice back in town starting 3-6 tonight. FYI - His main studio is in Madison - although he'll be traveling to Monroe and few days a week. Unlike all the right wing talk radio puppets Sly brought on people from the other side like Glen Grothman and believe or not Walker before he dropped the bomb. Yes he's made some mistakes but by far he's the most influential talk radio show host in the Madison area. You can listen on your radio or stream him on your phone app. A great talent. I hope you tune in Dave.

93.7 Big Oldies- Enjoy

It was great to hear Sly once again. One of his first guests was the honorable Glen Grothman. Now would Vicki McKenna have someone like Glen from the other side on her show. I think Dave knows the answer to that.
