'No guns' posted at East Towne Mall; where were the trigger warnings?
Merry Christmas to you, dearest reader. Fear not liberal pilgrim, there is room for you in the Stately Manor. We turn no one away at any time of year.
We are cheered this otherwise dreary year by a most charitable act performed by our Muslim brothers and sisters in faraway Kenya. When the radical Islamic terrorist group Al-Shabaab attacked a passenger bus seeking out the Christians on board, the Muslim passengers demanded that the haters kill all of them or no one. Their lives were spared.
So rare but too often necessary, such selfless acts of bravery are the shining stars on our Christmas tree. Like the high school athlete who paid with his own life protecting two teenage girls caught in the crossfire of a gang firefight. The WWII prisoner of war who told the Germans the entire platoon was Jewish. Jesus on the cross.
We need more antidotes to despair. America needs the sunny optimism of Ronald Reagan and Tommy Thompson. Leaders who preached the virtues of hard work and personal responsibility, who promised better tomorrows of growth and opportunity.
Instead, the politics of envy, redistribution, identity, grievance mongering, and the cult of victimhood threaten even prosperous Madison.
The shooting last Saturday at East Towne Mall ought to rouse even the most complacent Madison progressive to some small self-examination. On the busiest shopping day of the Christmas season, in a crowded mall full of children and their parents, selfish and narcissistic teenagers settling some petty grievance sullied the holidays and despoiled yet another public space.
Where is the race card when you need it?
Are there not enough neighborhood centers? Potluck suppers? Too much free speech on the UW campus? Quick, more restorative justice! Bernie’s free college! Dane County’s new Office of Equity and Inclusion to the rescue! Blame white privilege and bad cops. Texting Brandi Grayson. Time to shut down East Washington Avenue!
But do not blame 50 years of Great Society entitlement.
And where were the trigger warnings? Literally! Is it false advertising if the shopping mall advertises its premises as a gun-free zone?
One might suggest, if he dare swim upstream, that something is missing where the moral core should be. Yes, the Young Squire was something of a rascal in his teen years. But we weren’t shooting at each other — and not because there weren’t guns in the house. Are you joking! No guns on the farm?
Can we stipulate that those East Towne troublemakers had not been working a shift at the cell phone kiosk for Christmas gift money? That they had not been ringing bells for the Salvation Army? Why give when you can take?
Why talk about the real root causes — things like the degradation of the family, the war on police, and the end of discipline in our schools — when you can glom onto the inevitable overreaction?
State Rep. Bob Gannon, Republican from Slinger, to the rescue. Yes, he called the teen shooters (they’re not cooperating with the police) “scum bags” and “creeps.”
