with David Blaska

Madison alders, make your checks payable to Chief Mike Koval

This just in … from 1968

After more than 50 years of Great Society giveaway programs, set-asides, subsidies, and affirmative action, minority race neighborhoods in big cities across America are free-fire zones.

The cure for urban dysfunction is right here in The Voice of Progressivism!

So what is The Capital Times’ answer to the self-immolation of the black community last weekend in Milwaukee?

More of that old demon, Big Gummint! I josh you not. (“Milwaukee’s crisis can and must be addressed.”)

First, Your Progressive Voice lays down a substrata of high-falutin’ gibberish: “There are no quick fixes for Milwaukee and other cities where problems have gone neglected for decades. But there are answers. The challenges are systemic, and the responses must be systemic. That may sound complicated to some people.”

Not complicated sounding at all. No, more like a Miss America contestant in the essay portion of the competition, only more naive.

What “systemic change” does The Capital Times pull out of its tattered New Deal/Great Society bag of tricks? Answer: another make-work summer jobs program that was old when Hubert Humphrey was around.

Yes sir, the cure for what ails the shooters, looters, and arsonists in our major cities is a $5.5 billion (with a B) boondoggle called the “Employ Young Americans Now Act.” (Doesn’t even make a good acronym.) This sputtering dud was sponsored by two Old Deal warhorses, Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, and Sen. “Feel the Bernie” Sanders, socialist of Vermont.

This “new approach to urban policy,” as The Progressive Voice laughably calls it, somehow would persuade semi-literate gang bangers to put aside their stolen Glocks for paintbrushes and garden rakes.

Make-work summer jobs? That is “systemic change”?

No mention of improving the failed public schools, too long held hostage to teacher unions and their demands for free Viagra. (The Progressive Voice calls school choice “playing games with school funding.”) Not a word about a rebirth of self-respect, personal responsibility, and respect for the law. (Crime produces poverty, not the other way around.)

No demand for the restoration of two-parent families, despite the empirical evidence that the absence of fathers produce feral sons. No prescription for healthy habits, like:

  • Don’t point your gun at a police officer.
  • Don’t shoplift the convenience store and then complain about high prices.
  • Don’t burn down the beauty shop and then wonder why employers aren’t moving in.
  • Do get up in the morning ready to learn, work, save, and contribute to your community. (As they said on Romper Room: “I’m a Romper Room Do Bee, a Do Bee all day long!”)

No, instead, Your Progressive Voice doubles down on 50 years of failure with another injection of the same old, low-expectations Marxist dogma: black folks are just helpless hostages awaiting The Next Big Government Program.

Just keep them voting Democrat.

"high-falutin’ gibberish". Really? Pot, meet kettle. But you gibberish is much lower on the falutin' scale.

Dave, you need to enroll in the UW's "cultural fluency" program so you can better understand the legitimate grievances of Sharon Irwin and her BLM enablers. The lofty purpose of this program, according to a State Journal article, is "to provide a foundation of civility and respect for all people ...." Especially those who've done nothing to earn anyone's civility and respect. Another example, like the costly boondoggle to provide make-work summer jobs for inner-city gangbangers, of liberals' touching, childlike faith in the perfectibility of human nature. A faith that generates an endless stream of expensive, feel-good programs whose repeated failure does nothing to dissuade the true believers from their goals or from demanding that the rest of us fund them.

The funny thing about blaska is he thinks writing this blog fulfills waking up (somewhat debatable), learning, working, saving and contributing to the community.

Most says he goes 1/5 and I guess a .200 batting average might seem good on some teams.

Failed parenting and failed grand parenting. Tony Robinson was groomed for the failed life he led. A convicted violent felon (on probation) ingests hallucinogenic drugs, goes on a rampage and then confronts an armed police officer. Didn't that sweet grandmother ever offer the gentle giant some life advice? She has just become another attention seeker trying to stay in the spotlight. She should be on her knees begging God for forgiveness. I'm so glad we have Koval as chief.

You're not actually accusing someone of voting against his/her best interests, are you? Because that sounds suspiciously like what Democrats have said about working people in northern Wisconsin who have voted for Scott Walker overwhelmingly, only to watch him drastically reduce funding for their schools and out-state UW campuses.

The level of anger at those whose opinions are different from yours is astonishing here. Do you really believe that liberals are the cause of all evil in this country? The young man was carrying a gun, which was the reason for his demise. Do you not carry a gun and urge others to? Guns are made and sold at an alarming clip in this country. Do you think that trend exists in a vacuum without situations like this the increasingly inevitable result?

Your solution seems to be that people need to get their acts together, and I can't find fault with that. But they need help to do that, particularly those who are now three or more generations deep in poverty and can't-do thinking. Do you actually think it only takes a drill sergeant mentality to turn it around? These people have enormous problems and needs. The illiteracy rate is out of control. They don't know how to find a job, let alone apply for, get and keep one. There's no example for doing so in many of these households.

Blaming is apparently the reason for this column. I'd like to see something about solutions, specifically solutions I can help with. I'm certainly not going to donate to a politician.
