Abandoning the calf path

Abandoning the calf path

Hi, fellow traveler. Can you spare a few minutes along the way to consider a poem written by Sam Walter Foss (1858-1911)? I think you’ll appreciate it.

A Book of Poem: Barry Levenson adds new spice to his mustard business

When you visit the Mustard Museum in Middleton, you’ll find a new savory offering on the shelves alongside mustards of every variety: A Book of Poem by museum curator (and owner) Barry Levenson. And, if you are feeling witty, you can pen your name onto the cover as his co-writer (he left a place there for you to do so on its appropriately mustard-yellow cover).

Now landing: The Badger Honor Flight

Now landing: The Badger Honor Flight

I am sandwiched between two vets on a plane. To my right, Elmer Fisk (“74 days away from being 90 years old”) fidgets with his carry-on items, anxious to deplane, wondering what the holdup is. He had arrived at the airport at 4 a.m., and he’s already flown to D.C. and back. He’s had one of the longest days in over 50 years and now he’s anxious about connecting with the adult son scheduled to pick him up. He worries about being late. The exhilaration of the day is beginning to wane and fatigue is setting in, but he doesn’t complain, because how could anyone complain at the end of a day like the one he’s been given? It would feel un-American.

Let’s give Parisi some rope and see what he does with it

Let’s give Parisi some rope and see what he does with it

County Exec Joe Parisi is suggesting, in these (dark) budget days, that taxpayers fund a new full-time director of economic development for his Jobs & Prosperity Project – as well as an assistant (which already is funded in the present budget). I agree that we need to add the top position, and to keep the second – and create this new department. Therefore, I hope it passes the Dane County Board’s budget process intact without being whittled down. Why? I’m cautiously optimistic that the man really does mean business. And you know, loyal readers, that I don’t usually pay politicians so high a compliment.

Flight preparation: Behind-the-scenes prep for the Badger Honor Flight

Flight preparation: Behind-the-scenes prep for the Badger Honor Flight

I arrived early last Saturday, to CUNA’s headquarters, for the three-hour training session for World War II veterans and “guardians” who will be taking the Badger Honor Flight plane to Washington, D.C., on Nov. 12 to visit the war memorials at the National Mall and also at Arlington Cemetery. That’s a long sentence I just wrote, containing as many dreams and anxieties as words. The veterans and guardians alike anticipate a very long and emotional journey to a place 847 physical miles (and 70 emotional years) away.
