Crate & Barrel: the "Ultimate Wedding" results may be legal, but are they "right?"

Thanks to all who voted for the disabled Chicago police officer for the "Ultimate Wedding" contest that I brought to your attention in a previous blog — and thanks for the many questions I've since received about the results. I received an e-mail announcement, as a voter myself, from Crate & Barrel stating that although my favorite couple did, in fact, win (by a landslide) the most votes, and had the most compelling story, the business decided to give the winning package to another couple. But our police officer and his bride got a $500 gift card ... or so the e-mail (which also carried promotional messages for the company) informed me.

This year, the winners were from a diverse range of businesses, with differing challenges and goals, but they shared the limelight at the Dane County Awards program on June 18th. I had the honor of introducing them to the audience, in my role as emcee of the event, and now it is my honor to also introduce them to you!

Toys for Tots and also Toys for Teens: The perfect gift for (you know who).

Looking for a unique gift for your boss this holiday season? It's never too soon to start thinking about it, right? Because otherwise, it's a last minute hassle passing around envelopes trying to get money from staff and then another hassle to figure out what to buy with whatever mystery sum you collect.

Photography Contest Winners Announced!

The response to our first photo contest was so impressive (both the quality and the quantity) that we have decided to make it a monthly offering! When you see the winning photos, you'll see why, and you are invited to send your photos in, too, so that we can fairly get a sense of the work.

Carnivals — They're not for the average family anymore.

Carnivals — They're not for the average family anymore.

Cost of a funnel cake (no topping at all) and small lemonade: $8. Cost of a "Ride Any Ride All Day" wristband: $20. Exclusion: bumper cars. The bumper cars had been included in the $18 dollar wristband last year at Brat Fest, so that was a shock when we tried to get my grandson a seat in a car and were told gruffly "not without three more tickets" by the grouchy man running the ride. We had two grandchildren (and the two parents required to ride along with them) waiting to get on that ride, so the price of 12 additional tickets per ride (above the $80 already spent on four wristbands) was the final straw.
