Another Patrick and Nana Adventure – What we are doing on our summer vacation

By the time you read this, my grandson Patrick (age 10) will have just realized his dream. And believe me, it is his dream ... not mine. Anyone who covets vacation time as I do will realize that whatever can go wrong will go wrong when you plan one, and I have the sense that the stars were aligned on a different planet when we put this trip together.

Ever imagine supporting first responders at a disaster? Here’s your chance!

Recently I was deployed by the Salvation Army to “work the fire” that broke out in an apartment building just off Capitol Square. What that meant was that I donned a logo golf shirt, threw magnetic signs on my car that would get me past police roadblocks, and met the SA Emergency Services canteen truck on-site to feed 80 exhausted fire and police officers. On this day, at that public disaster, Marta Budworth and I handled “the callout.”

The IB Reality Series: I honestly can’t make this stuff up

Recently I sent our 15 employees out to area thrift shops one morning with $20 each to spend, promising prizes for the most unique and also the most practical purchases. We’re a somewhat competitive lot, and I had forewarned Aaron, our advertising art director, that he was a rookie facing off with an experienced thrift-shop junkie. “I know all the best places for unusual items,” I boasted. “You better do better than ‘interesting’ if you want to take home the top prize.”

Opportunities are what you make them, right? Help us make this one a win-win for all of us!

For our first expo, In Business staffers wanted to make a significant splash with a breakfast keynoter, and our hat is tipped to Nathan Brinkman, who linked us up with Amilya Antonetti, Fox News’ “voice of small business.” She’s all over network television reality business programming and syndicated radio lately, and so we were thrilled to capture one of TV’s hottest rising stars for our gig on Wednesday, October 19, at the Alliant Energy Center. So what could be the problem with that?
