11-year-old mayor trades biz advice for dollhouse furniture

This being vacation week for many of us, my grandson Patrick, 11, is spelling me by writing a little blog on secrets for success in business in 2013. He already wrote a 30-page business plan for his own future enterprise and also authored and illustrated a children’s book series. Now he’s adding “business blogger” to his résumé.

JGP will be “Open for Business” Tuesdays, hosting “After Hours” on Fridays

Santa has something special for you in his sack of goodies, though it won’t be delivered until January 2013. Then, IBMadison.com will launch expanded Friday coverage with a second weekly ezine of original content. We’ll be moving some reader favorites into the Friday slot (like “After Hours” additional “Bring It On” editorials, “Professional of the Week” profiles, etc.) and we’ll be introducing some new business content to Tuesdays, including “Open for Business” – concise how-to business blogs – which I’ll be writing.

Checking the IB Santa’s “Naughty or Nice” list

Email sent by Jessica this morning to me and the rest of our staff: “I was naughty again! I received a tabletop billiards table and this note: ‘You’re behind the 8-ball for your bad behavior. To redeem yourself, name a colleague you’d like to compete with. At the next staff meeting, you’ll get the chance to regain the title ‘winner’ again.’ Karen, are you up for a friendly game at the next staff meeting after your dance routine?"

The Patrick & Nana Revue: What one little boy needs you to know

First, a shout-out to Lisa, the sweet soul I met at the Monona McDonald’s, where Kevin and I were bundling grandkids Natalie, 6, and Nathanial, 7, into coats following lunch and indoor playground antics. We were about to continue our adventures with a trip to Vitense Golf when Lisa introduced herself, saying she loved my writing. Of course, while she said very nice and kind things, I was mentally cursing myself for not wearing makeup or “decent” clothes (a suede mumu is comfy for chasing grandkids, but the Fashion Police would have arrested me). Isn’t that always the way it is?

A favorite holiday memory from Jody’s favorite writer! Author Margaret George shares a Christmas story

You know the plotline of Misery? Where Stephen King’s main writer character, Paul Sheldon, is being stalked and then held hostage by his “Number One Fan,” Annie Wilkes? Well, I don’t go quite that far, but I do follow author Margaret George’s career from a respectful distance, and like Annie, I wait for my star’s next novel with mixed delight and urgency.
