2020 CDA Best New Development or Renovation – Residential (Multiunit): UW-Whitewater New Residence Hall

The University of Wisconsin–Whitewater’s new residence hall was specifically designed with equity and inclusion in mind, especially for students with varying degrees of mental and physical disabilities. The five-story residence hall is home to 410 students and two hall directors and their families, but the inclusive approach ensures that students with disabilities do not face barriers to interact with the rest of the student body within living arrangements or other campus buildings. The design factored in sound, scent, and light sensitivities, allowing students with disabilities to feel independent and not bound to specific rooms and requiring people to come to them. High contrast finishes and textured pavement were selected to assist in wayfinding for those with visual impairment, helping to delineate different areas such as a walking path from a seating area.
