15-year Amtrak plan proposes hub in Madison
A new map from Amtrak outlines rail service growth across the country, including more routes in Wisconsin, according to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal. The aspirational map includes a hub in Madison, new routes to Eau Claire and Green Bay, and improved service to Chicago. The plan incorporates Amtrak’s vision through 2035 to improve service within Wisconsin and to the Twin Cities and Chicago.
The plan includes the potential for a federal partnership that would make it easier on Wisconsin and other states by providing funds for both capital expenses and operational costs to begin service. A plan proposed by former Gov. Jim Doyle in 2010 did not include federal funding for the first few years of the railroad service’s operational costs.
