Madison International Trade Association: Economic Recovery in 2010? View from the Federal Reserve & Prospects for International Trade |
| 11:30 AM |
Fluno Center for Executive Education - Skyview Room, 601 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53715 |
The Madison International Trade Association January program features two economic experts who will give their views on the prospects for economic recovery in 2010.
More than one year after the global economic crisis, there are conflicting projections and information about when we can expect the U.S. economy to recover and what the recovery will look like. William Strauss, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, will discuss projections for the trajectory of the U.S. economy in 2010, the major risks and obstacles to recovery, and the role of key Midwestern business sectors in reigniting economic growth.
The public sector has played an important role in stimulating recovery. Governments around the world, including the U.S., China, Japan, and European Union countries, are implementing huge spending packages in response to the crisis. Michael Knetter, Albert O. Nicholas Dean of the Wisconsin School of Business, will discuss the international trade implications of these stimulus packages and will comment on the prospects for an export-led U.S. economic recovery in 2010.

Six Sigma and Performance Improvement in Higher Education: Lessons from the Quad |
| 5:30 to 7:00 PM |
WEA Trust, 45 Nob Hill Road, Madison |
Institutions of Higher Education are plagued with inefficiency, suffering many of the consequences including higher cost, unsatisfactory customer service, and an inability to respond to changing business conditions. Recent initiatives at a number of institutions have employed Lean and Six Sigma as an organizational imperative. And though lean/six sigma holds great promise for this sector, many obstacles to successful engagement endure. In this session, participants will examine the current state of lean/six sigma in higher education, identify common issues, examine critical keys to success, and discuss business opportunities. Carl Vieth will present current process improvement initiatives at the UW. He will also discuss how these compare with his experience in other service industries. Carl brings the tremendous resources of the University to the engineering and technology community in business and government. In addition to his appointment in Engineering Professional Development, Carl is a frequent lecturer for the University¹s Center for Advanced Studies in Business. He holds a Certificate in Sales Management from the University of Wisconsin Center for Advanced Studies in Business and a Six Sigma Black Belt Certification through General Electric Corporation. Join us for this exciting Roundtable!
