Neighbors push back on University Ave. plans

Saying they don’t want development along University Avenue toward Middleton to resemble the “canyon effect” being created along East Washington Avenue, some residents living in the Spring Harbor neighborhood are pushing for more green buffer space between the street and new developments, according to a story in The Capital Times.

Green space as well as allowable building sizes are pitting residents against city zoning regarding mixed-use developments proposed at the former site of Perkins Restaurant & Bakery at 5237 University Ave., and the former Brennan’s Market site at 5533 University Ave.

Initial plans for the Perkins site, for example, included a few mixed-use residential buildings with retail or a restaurant and plenty of green space lauded by the neighborhood, but the site, zoned “Suburban Employment,” has developer Degen & Associates now working on alternate plans for a larger medical-type building that would be situated much closer to the street and more in accordance with city plans.

Back-and-forth discussions continue in search of compromises.
