State still dead last for startup activity
The latest Kauffman Foundation index still has Wisconsin ranked dead last — 50 out of 50 states — for startup activity. In fact, the report shows Wisconsin scoring even lower than last year.
The Kauffman index measures three things: the rate of new entrepreneurs; the proportion of entrepreneurs launching businesses because they see an opportunity rather than because they’re unemployed; and the percentage of all the employer businesses that are startups.
City by city, Madison performs well, but Milwaukee did not, ranking 39th out of the top 40 largest metropolitan U.S. markets.
Kauffman’s recent “Main Street entrepreneurship” index had more positive news, ranking Wisconsin 12th.
