1. What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
The same answer for both, which is that as much as we try to plan, we never know exactly what the next day might hold. With ever-changing tax laws and our clients’ dynamic business situations, there’s rarely a dull moment. The challenge is to be on top of things so that you can best be available to tackle whatever comes up, and the reward is the feeling you get when you know you’ve truly helped someone who has entrusted you to be their advisor.
2. Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
I get a lot of inspiration from reading and re-reading Coach John Wooden’s book, simply titled Wooden. Most of his coaching philosophies also apply to leadership in a business setting, as well as in maintaining professional relationships. I also admire scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson for his passion and unique ability to market and promote interest in the many wonders of science.
3. What has been the high point of your career so far?
I’m proud to have recently completed a master’s degree from UW–Milwaukee, a Master’s of Science in Taxation.
4. Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
Appreciate the journey and acknowledge any setbacks as an opportunity for growth. And don’t be in a rush to get “there,” because once you arrive, there’s always another “there.” Enjoy where you are today but never stop learning.
5. What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?
As a tax professional, there’s no better place to be. As CPAs, we work longer hours in the coldest and darkest months of the year, and then have a very flexible schedule for the summer months. Every weekend is like a mini-vacation of some sort with my wife and two sons, whether it’s camping, biking, canoeing, or any number of other outdoor activities — it’s all either right here in Madison or just a short drive away.
