City terminates internet contract

The city of Madison has terminated a $512,000 contract it signed with ResTech Services, which was hired to implement a “Connecting Madison” pilot program to provide internet services to four low-income neighborhoods.

According to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal, ResTech was supposed to bring service to more than 1,000 customers but ran into complications and had only signed 19 customers so far.

The city filed a cease-and-desist letter and provided a 45-day notice to terminate on Nov. 20, which ends at midnight on Jan. 4.

There was no specific reason for the termination, but any further payments to ResTech are on hold until the issue is fully investigated.

Connecting Madison was an initiative aimed at battling the “digital divide.”
